As a continuation of Beth’s post yesterday about rejection I thought I’d give you a little song to sing. For some reason as I do my revisions I find myself humming this old Elvis song called Suspicion and it will not go away. Realizing I can’t fight songs in my head (as opposed to voices – that’s a whole different ball of wax), I decided to rewrite the song to fit my thoughts.

Unfortunately, as I put this blog together, I could not figure out how to keep the video to stay on this page and the amazing lyrics I slaved over for at least five minutes. With apologies to those of you more tech-savvy readers, you’ll need to have this site open twice. Click the link below and leave it open while you return to this post so you can sing along with my lyrics. If you can channel your inner Elvis (come on everybody has one) and sing really, really loud along with the music you can sort of make it fit.

Every time you tell me it needs more work I am deflated
Every rejection makes me think you do not care
Though you keep on saying you really, really love my writing
Do you speak the same words to other writers when I’m not there.

Rejection, torments my heart,
Rejection, keeps us apart,
Rejections, you torture me.

Every time you call me and tell me we should meet tomorrow
I can’t help but think that you’re meeting someone else tonight,
Why should my desire to get it accepted cause me sorrow?
Why am I so doubtful whenever you’re out of sight?

Rejection, torments my heart,
Rejection, keeps us apart,
Rejections, you torture me.

Agent, if you love my writing, can you please be honest,
And help me drive these foolish fears right out of my mind,
How I hope and pray that my writing will keep on growing stronger,
Maybe I’m suspicious ‘cause publication’s hard to find.

Rejection, torments my heart,
Rejection, keeps us apart,
Rejections, you torture me.
